New Instruments For Musical Expression: E.M.A.

New Interfaces for Musical Expression, also known as NIME, is an international conference dedicated to scientific research on the development of new technologies and their role in musical expression and artistic performance.

The conference began as a workshop (NIME 01) at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) in 2001 in Seattle, Washington, with the concert and demonstration sessions being held at the Experience Music Project museum. Since then, international conferences have been held annually around the world:

NIME is a conference which happens every year which is dedicated to improving and researching new musical instrument variations and ideas. I took part in a class at NYU’s ITP program which followed these ideals.

I decided to make a device that would be similar to Benjamin Franklin’s Armonica, which was a device made out of glass bowls, rotating around an axis. These bowls were stacked like a Russian nesting doll, and played by running your fingers across them. I decided to create one for the modern age by using stepper motors, wine glasses, and rods which rubbed against the glasses. I performed in front of an audience for two nights, the second of which was recorded and available for view below.
